Dear Readers,

If you keep driving south on I71 into Kentucky, cut over onto I65 south, then take the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway west, you’ll head into Crittenden County.  There, you’ll find the town of Marion. It’s a pretty little place, with wide sidewalks and a stately courthouse.  Just north of Marion is a small, secluded Amish community.  It was first settled in 1977, and is made up of four church districts and six Amish schools. The Amish here are known for their furniture making, quilts, and their well-stocked nurseries and greenhouses.

The area is lush and wooded. The roads are narrow and winding.  Crooked Creek runs through it all. In the dry spells, the creek easily crossed. When the rains come, it swells to the size of a river.  Signs, black block letters painted on white-washed wooden signs direct you to shops.  It’s beautiful and private. Full of rabbits and wild turkeys and deer.

I thought it would be a perfect setting for my next series, The Secrets of Crittenden County.  I had in mind a series of books where a whole lot of change takes place one spring. The cast of characters is rather large, but that’s okay.  They’ve got a lot to do. There are romances to bloom, secrets to uncover, and a murder to solve, too.

I hope you will enjoy your time in Crittenden County, helping Sheriff Mose Kramer figure out what really happened to Perry Borntrager. And if you’re tempted to visit the real place, I hope you will. I promise it’s a great place to visit…and a whole lot safer than my fictitious version.

The Secrets of Crittenden County begins in March with MISSING.

The Flood

We had a little flood in our basement last week. A few months ago, we decided to build a little bar in our basement, complete with an ice maker and mini-refrigerator.  Some days I’m in my basement office for eight hours or more~I’d been dreaming about how nice it would be to walk right into the living space down there and grab my favorite drink-Diet Coke in a glass with ice. Or brew fresh coffee. So, for the last few months, we’ve been getting it all installed. Last Wednesday? Finished! It was just perfect! I ran to Walmart and grabbed new glasses and a case of Diet Coke!

Last Thursday morning? I went downstairs to find most of our basement soaking wet. The ice maker connector had broken off and water had poured into our beautiful new cabinets all night long. Ugh! Of course, my husband was out of town, but he did help me call everyone who needed to be called. And by Thursday night, the restoration company had installed 10 fans and assorted commercial heaters throughout our basement.

I carried my computer upstairs, and now I’m set up at the kitchen table.

The photograph is how my office looked all weekend.

Things are better now. By next week, I should be back in my office, and finally enjoying my glass of Diet Coke.

The good news? Through it all, everyone has been terrific. From our insurance rep to the plumber and contractor, to well, you name it.  It proved to me once again that something good can always come out of bad things!

with blessings,

Shelley
