Almost there…

I’ve officially entered ‘I’m almost done with the book’ syndrome. My husband named this syndrome about a year ago. It was one night when I forgot to make dinner, never got out of my pajamas, and had easily a hundred sheets of marked up paper on my office floor.  I was apologizing, saying I didn’t know what was wrong with me-when he held up a hand with a little knowing grin.

“Shelley, you get this way with every single book,” he said.  “You’re about a week away from turning it in, right?”

Gulp.

Actually, I was. For better or worse, I seem to have developed a pattern as I near the end of a book. Slowly but surely, it begins to be all I think about. I stop leaving the house because I don’t want to deal with ‘real’ people. I discuss the characters in my book during every meal. Cooking becomes a non-issue. Soon, I stop answering the phone, too.

Of course, that’s actually a good thing. Yesterday, when a girlfriend called to RSVP for a dinner we’re hosting, it took me a good thirty seconds to figure out what she was talking about. There’s no dinner party in my book, you see.

Within the next week, I’ll email the book off, pick up my office, and eagerly unite with the real world. Finally, I’ll keep a hair appointment. I’ll run errands, walk the dogs, and return phone calls. I’ll cook again.  Who knows-I might even do laundry!

Am I alone? Anyone else ever get  end of the book syndrome? Or, for you non-writers, is there a time in your life when things just don’t get done? Beginning of the school year? Summer? Tax time?

In honor of still communicating through e-mail, I’m running a little contest. Leave me a comment before Thanksgiving. I’ll have my long suffering husband draw a name…and if you’re a winner, I’ll send you one of my Sisters of the Heart books (your choice), and a  $10 Starbucks gift card.  Perhaps a new book and a latte might be just the thing to kick off your Christmas season.

I so enjoyed your presentation last Saturday. And now a chance to win a book? Cool beans. *grin*

Oh, trying to get my cookbook done might just do me in, if I’m not careful! After reading this post, I don’t feel so bad =)
I would love a copy of your second or third book in your Sisters of the Heart series. Autographed of course! HIDDEN was terrific :)

Shelley says:

Oh, Sherry,

You’ll have to tell me more about your cookbook! Thanks for commenting!

Marcie says:

How about beginning-of-the-book syndrome when I’m trying to discover who my characters are and they aren’t answering me? You would think they’d want their story told and give me details, but no, only silence.

Shelley says:

LOL, Marcie!

My husband seems to think my characters always talk to me, just like they’re right by my side! Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Somedays, they’re so quiet, I don’t know what to do with them. : )

thanks for commenting.

Hi Cathy,

As soon as I turn in Autumn’s Promise, I’m going to start on GRACE. I can hardly wait to go back to those Brennemans.

I hope you, too, have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Ella says:

Wow so i’m really behind on the Sister’s of the heart series. I’ve been so busy that i haven’t even read Wanted and today I find out that you’ve written a 3rd book already. I need to make some time to finish this amazing series no matter how busy I am. :)
Hope you have a great Christmas season.

Shelley says:

Thanks, Ella! I know you how busy everyone is. I hope you will like WANTED and FORGIVEN, too. : )

Carol Goodlace says:

Hello…..I’m very honored to hear from you and to know you are a “Real Person” just like me…lol I am not a writer but a mother to children with disabilities, and like you, I sometimes don’t get things done. Some days my life is consumed of doctor appointments and soo many other appointments my daughters have. My life is very hectic and some days I have no idea how I made it to the next day….then I sit back and think….I haven’t been alone, God has been there; that’s the only explanation I have. Secondly, I believe, blessed- wonderful writers like your self help me too….I don’t know if I would be sane if it wasn’t for my Amish fiction books!! I love your books!!
I appreciate you as an author….thank you soo much, keep them coming!!
Blessings, Carol Goodlace

Shelley says:

Carol,

Thank you so much for your note. I think being a mother is the most important job ever. You sound like an awesome mom!

My oldest is coming home from college on Tuesday, and I can hardly wait. I’ve really missed him, and missed doing all those mom things for him, like making him breakfast. : ) He, of course, says he is looking forward to being fussed over for a few days!

I hope you have a blessed holiday, as well.

Donna Farrell says:
